We supply lenses in three basic versions: -

SINGLE VISION, BIFOCALS and PROGRESSIVES.

SINGLE VISION is the simplest form of lens, and the most frequently prescribed.

They correct only one set of optical error at a time.
You may need two pairs of single vision spectacles.
One pair for normal use and one pair for reading.

Your prescription will identify if you need one or two pairs.
If there is a Reading Addition value (always a positive number) on your prescription you will need two pairs of glasses to complete the FULL prescription.
You can of course just by one pair if you wish.

Your Single Vision distance spectacles will be made excluding the Reading Addition.

Your Single Vision reading spectacles will be made including the Reading Addition.

They are the easiest lenses to adjust to wearing, and are ideal for first time wearers.
They are still the preferred choice for the majority of the population.

Good value for money, they readily lend themselves to buying through ruOK4specs.com and just compare our budget price of only £26 to what you pay on the high street.

N.B. Single vision reading glasses are not VDU glasses. Please consult a dispensing optician if you require Single Vision VDU glasses.

BIFOCALS are spectacles where the lens is split to allow the upper portion to be used for distance vision and the lower or shaped portion (segment) to be used for near (reading) vision.

Your prescription will identify if you can have bifocals.
If there is a Reading Addition value you can have bifocals

For many a good solution; but not for all. It can be unwise to wear Bifocals if you work at heights, climb ladders, have difficulty with stairs, etc. and they take time to adjust to wearing.

Bifocals allow the convenience of one pair of spectacles to be substituted for two single vision spectacles, but compromises obviously have to be made.

The lens area previously devoted to either distance vision or reading vision is now required to accommodate both in the one lens; resulting in a reduced lens area for both which can cause adjustment problems for some people. We recommend you select a frame with a large lens area.

Bifocals function at their best when used primarily for normal distance vision with the occasional reading use. If their main function is for reading, you should consider using single vision spectacles.

We offer the following shapes for the reading segment part of the lens.

R24 R38 D25 D28

If you already wear Bifocals you are advised to order the same shape and size segment, as a change can often cause serious adjustment problems.

If ordering Bifocals for the first time we suggest you select R38 if you are Short Sighted (Myopia; minus [-] Sphere number) and D28 if you are Long Sighted (Hypermetropia; [+] Sphere number).

Generally the larger the segment size, the easier it is to adjust to wearing bifocals and the greater the tolerance with fitting, especially if using for the first time.

However, Bifocal lenses function better with a larger lens area to ensure their full range of use. If you still decide to select a small lens you should consider selecting the smaller segment size.

PROGRESSIVES, (also called varifocals, graduated focals, and multifocals) were originally developed in France. Very useful if you view near, middle, and far distances in frequent succession, (e.g. computer office workers) as the have many focal lengths within the one lens to offer focussed depth of vision throughout a greater range.

However, they do not give a wide field of vision throughout the whole focal range and some people can experience difficulties with wearing them.

Area of Vision

In the diagram above, the shaded area roughly indicates the area of the lens you can see through, but outside this area vision is not so sharp.

Progressive lenses function better with a larger lens area to ensure their full range of use. If you still decide to select a smaller lens this may cause adjustment difficulties.

Progressives can be a good solution, but they are not for all. It can be unwise to wear Progressives if you work at heights, climb ladders, or have difficulty with stairs, etc.; they are not suitable for everyone, but for some they are an ideal solution.

Dispensing services offer extra lens treatments but they can add significantly to the basic cost of the lenses. Provided the lenses are cared for and not misused, you can avoid these extra costs.

However, for those customers preferring a wider product choice we also offer the same LENS EXTRAS available on the High Street.
After you have selected your glasses you can, if you wish, go to the LENS EXTRAS Page and select any of the following lens products and add them to your shopping basket.

Hard Coating. Resistant to scratches; not scratch proof.
Anti-reflection M.AR Coating. Reduces ghosting; improves contrast and cosmetic appearance.
Transition (photochromic) Lenses. They darken or lighten depending on the illumination. Single vision, bifocal and progressive.
Tints. Colour filters that can protect the eyes from glare or radiation.
U.V. Ultraviolet radiation inhibitor.
Thin Lenses. Cosmetically enhancing high refractive index of either 1.61 or 1.67 and particularly suitable where your prescription Sphere value is high.

All our plastic lenses are manufactured to British Standards. We use good quality lenses that are available on the high street, but at bargain prices. SO WHY PAY MORE?
